1969:
The U.S. begins a secret bombing operation against the North Vietnamese in eastern Cambodia.
The Nixon administration insisted this operation was justly targeted at Vietnamese and Khmer Rouge oppositions.
The U.S. dropped 540,000 tons of bombs . The exact death toll isn't known, but it is estimated that upwards of 500,000 Cambodians were killed by the bombings (PBS Frontline).
